Hereditary Cancer: What Does Your Family Tree Look Like?

Nancie Petrucelli MS, CGC (Director, Cancer Genetic Counseling Service/Senior Genetic Counselor) of Karmanos’s Cancer Institute will be sharing the role genetics play on hereditary cancers. About 5-10% of all cancers are hereditary, meaning an increased risk of developing certain cancers is being passed down in families through their genes. Knowing if you have an inherited risk allows you and your health care providers to be more proactive about your health. It can also inform family members who may be at increased risk. Attendees of this lecture will learn about genetic testing for hereditary cancer and when it may be appropriate as well as the benefits of such testing for patients and their relatives.
