The Power of Breath: A Workshop for Wellbeing Time 2:00 PM If cancer has taught us anything, it’s that we can’t always control what life may bring. However, we can control how we react to it. Breathing with intention can be a powerful tool to promote peace, decrease stress, and change how we feel. Moreover, regular breathwork and meditation practices can increase our immune system’s responsiveness and bring greater balance to our bodies. In this workshop, Terri Koster, E-RYT200 YACEP, will introduce you to techniques for harnessing the power of your breath to increase nervous system regulation and enhance physical and emotional wellbeing. Terri will include samplings of various breath practices, light stretching to facilitate comfort in seated and reclining poses, and short meditations to live in our world while changing the way we are affected by it. Once you have learned the techniques that work for you, the hope is that you will integrate them into your life to enhance your wellbeing every day. “We become what we practice the most.” THIS WORKSHOP IS SUITABLE FOR ALL LEVELS OF INTEREST AND EXPERIENCE. Terri has been practicing yoga and meditation for over 25 years. She is a certified yoga teacher and a member of The Yoga Alliance Organization, whose mission is to ensure high quality, safety, and accessibility of yoga instruction. Terri has facilitated a variety of yoga and meditation programs with Gilda’s Club of Metro Detroit over the last two decades and we are grateful to be able to bring her to The Lake House! Sweater Knitting Workshop Time 1:00 PM Consider the last time someone complimented your sweater. Now imagine being able to reply, “Thanks! I made it!” You’ve been knitting at least long enough to be pretty confident in your abilities…are you ready to take the plunge and knit your first pullover sweater? The idea of knitting a sweater can be daunting even for those who have been knitting for decades, but it’s not as difficult as you might think. A pullover sweater is just three tubes with some fun stuff in between! In this 4-part workshop, we will learn the basics of sweater construction, how to choose a pattern and yarn, and how to make sure your sweater will fit you in the end. You will benefit most by attending all four sessions. By the end of the four weeks, you will be well on your way to conquering your first sweater…hopefully the first of many! While she does not claim to be a knitting teacher, Heather has been knitting for over 15 years. In that time, she has knit over fifty sweaters and has helped many knitters troubleshoot their creations. This is not a learn to knit class and you will need to be confident with basic knitting stitches (knit, purl, and increasing/decreasing) and knitting in the round. If you have knit a hat in the round, you already have all the skills you will need! Because the yarn and needles you choose for a garment are a very personal decision, please plan to provide your own supplies for this workshop if you are able. We will discuss choosing a pattern and yarn in the first session, so you may want to wait to make a purchase until after that. If you have questions or concerns about this, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Heather at hbill@gildasclubdetroit.org. Info & Registration

It is a wonderful vehicle that helps survivors establish contact with others in order to reduce anxiety, fear, and isolation. The group offers an opportunity to discuss concerns and possible misconceptions related to treatment in a safe, loving environment. The support group has become the missing link for many - the glue that joins mind, body, and spirit.

The special camaraderie that is shared helps survivors realize they are not alone in their battle against this disease. You can get information about new cancer treatments, receive encouragement from others, be inspired by the personal stories, laugh, and cry in a safe environment. Meetings consist of informal sharing of information in a round table format with occasional speakers. To provide additional support, a chaplain is always present at the meetings.
